OSX Migration
Many software and hardware manufactures have stopped
developing and supporting software or hardware for Mac OS9
and most new releases are only for OSX. The latest release of
OSX is very stable and brings many advantages over OS9

We're not going to try and list all of the advantages of OSX so for
a full up-to-date list visit www.apple.com/macosx/ instead we
have selected a few key areas to think about when migrating
to OSX from OS9.

Budget
Depending on the size of your organisation upgrading to
OSX is typically going to involve a fair amount of money so
plan ahead carefully. Software will need to be upgraded,
hardware and peripheral devices upgraded or replaced and
for a smooth transition staff should be trained and involved
in the migration process.

Installation/Downtime
If planned thoroughly the migration should be achievable with
minimum downtime to your business. Upgrading an organisation
with a 100 mac’s or more can seem like a daunting task but can
in-fact be completed over the course of one weekend with the
right approach.

Software
Check with each manufacturer that they have released an OSX
compatible version of their software, there are still the odd one
or two that have still not released native versions. This process
should also be applied to drivers and utilities.

Look into the alternatives, Adobe InDesign in our opinion is a better
buy than Quark Xpress, but don’t forget to check thoroughly the
impact this could have on your workflow.

Multiple licensing and software bundles can bring costs down
considerably.

Read compatibility issues and users reports on new releases of
software, first hand experience is very valuable.

Improve the way you work
If your going to the expense of upgrading your systems then
investigate how OSX and your new software can actually improve
the way you work, this should be covered in your initial plans

Suppliers and clients
Don’t forget to check with your suppliers, if you are used to
sending out digital files check that your suppliers and clients
have compatible versions of the software.
